Beating Mother Nature has never been easy, but human tenacity has always put up a decent fight. In January, we witnessed the intense cold wave sweeping the nation - everyday a handful of people died (the death toll in total was near 50) while thousands of others succumbed to cold-related diseases.
As the nation rose to the occasion, Jagoree and Drishtipat in collaboration with a few other youth organizations such as UNYSAB, 1 Degree Initiative and Jaago Foundation, put together a blanket distribution drive on an urgent notice. Jagoree and its partner organizations eventually collected more than Tk. 4 Lacs in a short time span of two weeks, and distributed a total of 2500 blankets and many other warm clothes. The blankets were bought from a poor artisan community in Thakurgaon which otherwise had little access to the urban market, addressing a dual objective apart from providing relief to winter afflicted communities.
The districts in which blankets were distributed by Jagoree and its partners to poor villagers included Kurigram, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Bogra, Brahmanbaria, Hobiganj, Bagerhat and Satkhira. The project was coordinated by Imran Chowdhury of Jagoree. A short video of a blanket distribution ceremony in Bogra can be seen below.
